The North Dakota Fighting Hawks represent the University of North Dakota, competing in the Big Sky Conference in the NCAA Division I's Football Championship Subdivision. From 1973 to 2008, they played in the NCAA's NCAA Division II, winning the National Championship in 2001. From 1955 to 1972, they competed in the NCAA's College Division where they participated in and won three bowl games.

The North Dakota State Bison football program represents North Dakota State University in college football at the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision level and competes in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The Bison play in the 19,000 seat Fargodome located in Fargo, ND. The Bison have won 14 National Championships and 34 Conference Championships. They won five-consecutive NCAA Division I-FCS National Championships between 2011 and 2015 as well as a sixth FCS title in 2017. NDSU is the only college football program to ever win five consecutive NCAA national championships, and the only football program to win six FCS titles in seven years. In regards to overall record, post-season play, and titles won over the past 7 years; the NDSU Bison Football program is known as one of the most successful teams in the modern-day FCS.

The South Dakota State Jackrabbits football team is a Football Championship Subdivision program that competes in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Considered to be among the few perennial powers in the FCS, The Jackrabbits were a NCAA Division II program in the North Central Conference until moving to the Football Championship Subdivision in 2004. The current head coach is John Stiegelmeier. In March 2007, SDSU initially began their Division I FCS era by being a charter member of the now-defunct Great West Football Conference and stayed there until 2007 when they were accepted into the Missouri Valley Football Conference and began league play in the 2008 season. South Dakota State University has invested in their football program's facilities recently as they have some of the finest amenities and facilities at the FCS level including the largest video/scoreboard in the FCS a new 19,340 seat stadium, and a large state-of-the-art student athlete center in the north end zone.
