The Maryland Terrapins, commonly referred to as the Terps, consist of 20 men's and women's athletic teams that represent the University of Maryland, College Park in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I competition. Maryland was a founding member of the Southern Conference in 1921, a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1952, and is now a member of the Big Ten Conference.
The Penn State Nittany Lions women's volleyball program has had a long tradition, founded in 1976 by Tom Tait, long-time coach of the Penn State men's team, who coached the women's team from 1976–79 and was named a USA Volleyball All-Time great coach in 2007.
