Florida gets FDA approval for Canadian drug importation plan

• “Florida has demonstrated that [the drug importation plan] will significantly reduce the cost of [drugs] to the American consumer without posing additional risk to the public’s health and safety,” the FDA said in its letter authorizing the Florida plan.
• “Ensuring patients have access to needed medicines is critical, but the importation of unapproved medicines, whether from Canada or elsewhere in the world, poses a serious danger to public health.”
• In Florida, the state’s application to import drugs from Canada has been a top priority of DeSantis, who heavily lobbied former President Donald Trump to eventually give final authorization to enact the federal program in 2020.
